"I present you with..."

The day she wanted to arrive had finally come. For some reason, she didn't think she would feel the way she did. Nervous, anxious, excited. The morning breeze was playing with the wind chimes outside the bedroom window, and she felt strangely on edge. You see, she had accepted years ago that this day would never arrive, but as it inched closer, she felt strangely unprepared. As if this day was not supposed to happen to her. It was a strange thought, so she pushed it out of her head.

"Don't you know the hardest part is over?" A voice asked in the dark of the room. She knew he was beside her, smiling that innocent smile of his that she fell in love with. Rolling unto her side and searching for his face in the morning glow, he reached a hand out to touch her face gently.

"Just breathe... That's all you have to do. The rest will fall into place for you. You'll see." She would never understand how he could read her so well. She hadn't even spoken and yet he knew her fears. That kind of connection was a rarity.

"Yeah... I know I should be excited, but I'm scared." She grabbed his hand and kissed the back of it. His hand felt so perfect in hers.

Without saying anything, he pulled her into him, cradling her in his arms and whispering sweet nothings in her hair. “You don’t have to be scared about anything. You’re right where you need to be, it’s just life. And life is beautiful.” He breathed as he gave her a tight squeeze.

“I love you.” She managed to say without her voice cracking from tears forming in her eyes.

Bringing her head from the safety of his chest, he looked straight into her eyes. The intensity of his stare made her shiver slightly. “Everything will be alright. I promise you that…” Hovering slightly above her lips, he knew she was waiting for the sweet release of a kiss from him. Grinning slightly, he granted her wishes. The tender touch of his lips made her feel safe and at peace.

“Let’s get ready okay?” He asked her as he kissed her one more time and got ready to get out of bed. She followed shortly after and ten minutes later they were in their car on the way to the hospital.

The waiting room was full of people, some with their kids, some looking slightly out of place all alone. She felt lucky she had him with her.

Being called into the doctor’s office immediately sent her heart into overdrive, beating too fast and making her feel out of breath. He saw her anxiety and embraced her reassuringly as they found their way to the office and sitting down.

The doctor walked around the desk to sit in his chair and looked at the two expectant people in front of him. He smiled timidly and prepared his journal.

“Mrs. Thompson, I am very pleased to tell you that you are indeed pregnant. The in vitro fertilization has taken quite nicely. We are now in the process of determining how many eggs have been fertilized… Congratulations.”

She didn’t hear anything past the words, “you are indeed pregnant”. Her heart had skipped a beat and tears were forming in her eyes. She felt his hand grab hers firmly and squeezing as much as he could without hurting her. She heard him clear his throat; she could tell he was choked up. They were finally going to be parents. The day and the words they had waited so long to hear were finally here.

He caught her eyes and smiled. “Seems like our present finally decided to arrive.”
